Experimenting in baking can be fun, but it can also go really wrong. Unlike cooking, it’s really important to weigh ingredients for cookies, cakes, cupcakes or tarts. Otherwise, there’s a risk that the dough won’t rise, the pastry will taste bitter, collapse when it cools, or become rock-hard. To avoid this, you actually need a kitchen scale – but for some recipes, cups and spoons do the trick.
Temperatures during baking and cooking: Fahrenheit and Celsius
In large parts of the world, Celsius is the authoritative temperature unit. Celsius is easy to understand, 0° C represents the freezing point of water, 100° C the boiling point. For many, it is difficult to imagine Fahrenheit, since 0°F is equivalent to -17.8°C. 100°F is equivalent to 37.8°C. The 100° steps are distributed differently in Fahrenheit than in Celsius. One °F corresponds to about 0.56°C. It is therefore difficult to imagine how the temperatures feel to someone who is not familiar with the respective system.
A conversion is possible with the following formulas respectively:
Conversion from Fahrenheit to Celsius
°C = (°F - 32) * 5/9
Conversion from Celsius to Fahrenheit
°F = °C * 1,8 + 32
To save you the conversion, some practical examples that are more common.
- 250°F = 120°C
- 300°F = 150°C
- 325°F = 160°C
- 375°F = 190°C
- 425°F = 220°C
- 450°F = 230°C
- 500°F = 260°C
